Going on vacation during Spring Break can be what’s on everyone’s minds…but what if it just isn’t in the budget? Or what if you have a 4 month old at home and even thinking about traveling and staying in a hotel…dragging TONS of baby gear, working around naptimes, etc. just doesn’t sound enticing (Ahem…this couldn’t possibly be us right now-LOL)? What is a family to do?
In comes the art of the ‘Stay’cation!
Yes…creating lasting memories by just staying at home can be just as fun…and I mean JUST AS FUN! We have decided to ‘Stay’cation it this year for Spring Break and I think we will end up having a BLAST. Here are the activities planned for the week.
Pitch a tent and have a “campout.” Even though we can’t go to a campsite, we can bring the campsite inside. Eat lunch in the tent, read in the tent, tell stories in the tent, sleep in the tent, make outdoorsy crafts, have a pow-wow, watch a movie in the tent, etc. You can get as creative as you would like with this one. Have a friend sleepover. Invite your child’s friends to sleep over one night.
Have a “Craft Day” where you make various crafts throughout the day (Make sure to preplan it all so you aren’t rushing around finding supplies. You could also have a “Bake It Day” where you make cookies, muffins, cakes, etc.
Spend a day in nature. Take a nature walk, go for a bike ride, go to your nearest park and walk around, etc.
Visit your local museums, zoos, science parks, etc.
Go to a beach or pool. If you are stuck in chilly weather like we are in Ohio right now, going to the beach is out of question but going to a hotel for the night or even day to swim and have fun is always good and enjoyable.
The trick to enjoying a ‘Stay’cation is to deviate from daily routines and truly make it a vacation. If you enjoy eating out on vacations, do the same on your ‘Stay’cation. Don’t do the laundry or clean the garage, or other household projects. Relax. As odd as it sounds, bring discipline to the vacation by not allowing chores or drudgery to intercede and take away the fun. Remind yourself that, while you are at home, you still are on vacation. If you do so, a ‘Stay’cation can be more relaxing, fun, and certainly less costly than a big travel extravaganza.
