I’ve been around the block…and been there, done that. Yep…I have had the privilege of being a mommy to not one, not two, but soon to be three preschoolers. Having homeschooled my first two (and plan on doing it with my third as well), I have had my share of planning and implementing MANY activities. There are some I do with each kid at some point in their preschool years and some I do once and that is enough for a lifetime…if you catch my drift.

Having been around the block, I wish another momma would have pulled me aside and said, “Look, these are the MUSTS when it comes to your preschooler…the rest is just “fluff!” Unfortunately, I had to go through the process of likes and dislikes. The plus side of it all, I get to now share it with all of you.

So, without further ado, here are my preschool “Musts” when it comes to activities and classes.

  • Alphabet Cookies. Use alphabet cookies and have your child spell his or her name, words they are learning, write out their ABC’s, etc.
  • Dry Erase Boards. My kids (all 3 of them) LOVE to write on dry erase boards and I have found it EXCEPTIONAL for practice with following a line, tracing, and just plain old drawing and getting used to pencil grip.
  • BOOKS, BOOkS, and MORE BOOKS!!! I can’t stress it enough…READ TO YOUR CHILD…CONSTANTLY!!!
  • When the weather permits, go on alphabet walks. One of my kids’ ALL TIME FAVORITE learning activities. I give them a piece of paper with all of the letters written out on it, a pencil and a clipboard. As we walk the neighborhood, every time we see a letter, we cross that off on our paper. The goal is to find the entire alphabet. What a GREAT literacy activity right!?!
  • Folding Laundry. Yep…you heard me right! When I am folding laundry, I dump all of the socks on the floor and have my preschooler find all of the pairs and match them up. Not only are they learning how to fold, but they are matching as well.
  • Any matching game. My girls all love the matching games you buy at the store so that is my recommendation. I don’t encourage you to do matching games on your electronics with them…use the real deal where they have to manipulate the pieces.
  • Any game really. Games are a GREAT way to get your preschooler to learn to sit, follow directions, and learn sportsmanship. We play games all the time.
  • Cook with you. My middle child especially loved this one. She LOVES cooking and learned all of her numbers and even fractions by cooking with me. She learned that following a step by step recipes produces something we enjoy to eat and it also gave her GREAT one-on-one time.
